El Profesor Niek van Dijk is a world leading authority for arthroscopy and open surgery of the ankle. Over the years he and his team have developed new techniques for treatments of ankle, hindfoot and achilles tendon lesions. His operative techniques have spread throughout the world and have benefited (leading) athletes like Cristiano Ronaldo, Joao Felix, Juan Carlos Navarro, Keylor Navas, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Pepe, Marcelo, David Luiz, Marco van Basten as well as many non-athletes with ankle problems. Champions league teams like Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Manchester United, Arsenal, AC Milan, Juventus, AS Roma, FC Barcelona, FC Porto and AJAX are his clients.

Patients with acute ankle injury can develop chronic ankle instability which we can treat with an arthroscopic repair of the ligaments. Pain in the ankle often comes from impingement or from a cartilage lesions (osteochondral defect). They can result from a trauma or fracture. Both can very well be treated by ankle arthroscopy. Hindfoot pain comes from impingement, cartilage lesions or achilles tendinopathy. Some patients suffer from nerve compression. All of these lesions we can nowadays treat by arthroscopy. For arthrosis there are several options including injections with hyaluronic acid, inlays and braces, but sometimes we advise operative correction of the position. End stage arthritis can be an indication for arthrodesis or an ankle prosthesis.

Professor Niek van Dijk is a leading scientist and the founder of the Orthopaedic Research Center Amsterdam and the Amsterdam Foot & Ankle School. He was head of the Orthopaedic Department of the Amsterdam University Hospital. His great interest in teaching stimulated him to develop the free access Ankleplatform. On Ankleplatform all his techniques are freely available for surgeons around the world.

Niek van Dijk was president of several leading national and international organizations in the field of sports traumatology and surgery of the ankle. He is honorary member of international Societies and Associations such as the Spanish Arthroscopic society. He is tutor of 55 PhD-students who he guided to a successful defense of their PhD-thesis. Niek van Dijk published over 350 scientific indexed publications , wrote over 100 book chapters and is editor of several books. He is chief editor of JISAKOS, the journal of ISAKOS (the world leading society on sports traumatology and surgery of the knee & ankle).
